Maxim introduced the MAX97000/MAX97001/MAX97002 family of mono audio subsystems. These devices combine a high-efficiency, Class D mono speaker amplifier with distortion limiter; a DirectDrive II(TM) Class H stereo headphone amplifier; and an ultra-low-noise, analog bypass switch. Maxim's DirectDrive II technology utilizes a dual-mode internal charge pump that operates at ±0.9V for low signal levels, only switching to ±1.8V for signals that require higher output power. This innovative architecture minimizes power consumption while avoiding the signal discontinuity problems that plague other Class H implementations. Providing the industry's best efficiency (87%, typ) and audio quality, the MAX97000-MAX97002 are ideal for cellular phones, portable media players (PMPs), and other applications that require high audio quality, output power, and efficiency.
In addition to boosting efficiency, the DirectDrive II architecture eliminates the need for large DC-blocking capacitors by producing a ground-referenced output from a single supply. Meanwhile, spread-spectrum modulation and active emissions limiting significantly reduce EMI in the Class D output stage, thus enabling designs to meet EN 55022B standards without LC filters or shielding.** The integrated low-noise, analog DPST audio switch avoids the expense of an external switch and allows the Class D amplifier to be bypassed to reduce power consumption.

The MAX97000-MAX97002 feature high RF/TDMA noise rejection and best-in-class click-and-pop suppression with no audible artifacts at power on/off , both of which simplify the design iteration process. The subsystems also feature input mixing, volume control, and a flexible, user-defined input architecture with preamplifier gain settings. All controls are enabled through an I2C interface.

The MAX97000-MAX97002 deliver over 710mW of output power from a 3.7V supply into an 8ohm load with 87% (typ) efficiency. The MAX97000 is packaged in a 2.0mm x 2.0mm, 25-bump WLP with a 0.4mm pitch; the MAX97001/MAX97002 are packaged in 2.0mm x 2.5mm, 20-bump WLP with a 0.5mm pitch. All devices are fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius extended temperature range. Prices start at $0.75 for the MAX97000, and at $0.83 for the MAX97001/MAX97002 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
