The IES5528 is a drop-in replacement of the OM5428. The OM5428 is now being superseded by the IES5528 and should not be used in new design-ins. The IES5528 is designed to provide negative triac gate pulses that avoid the insensitive triac trigger quadrants. By doing this it uses significantly less supply current and hence reduces dissipation in the supply resistor allowing the use of low wattage power resistors.

In addition, the external configurability of the IES5528 makes it ideal for a variety of mains power control applications. The IES5528 can be configured as a soft start motor speed control to eliminate the effect of high starting torque, synchronous On/Off switching and time proportional temperature control. Example of application diagrams including mains phase controller, phase controller with soft start, time proportional controller and static switch are available on the datasheet.

Other key feature is the IES5528 is mains powered through a mains dropping resistor hence removing the need of additional DC supply circuitry. An external DC supply rail is also available from the IES5528 for powering sensors and/or low power ICs. Like other integrated circuits designed by Hendon Semiconductors, IES5528 is designed to minimise RF interference and transients on the mains supply with zero crossing switching of load current.

In general, the IES5528 features flexibility and simplicity for implementing triac driven phase control or switching applications. Consequently, providing engineers with a cost effective power and speed control solution.

The IES5528 is available in SO-16 RoHS compliant package.
