C&K Components has developed a series of surface mount top-actuated tactile switches with a range of actuation forces and extended operating lifecycles. The KSH series tactile switches are RoHS-compliant, single-pole, single-throw, top-actuated surface mount devices with a ‘soft touch’ tactile feel and a range of operating force ratings (1.6, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5N) with a travel distance of 1.3mm.

Contacts are rated for 50mA/10µA (minimum/maximum) and 12/2VDC (minimum/maximum), with an operational life of 200,000 cycles, up to 3.0N operating force. The switches operate in a temperature range of -40 to +90°C, and both two- and four-terminal styles are housed within the same 6.3x6.3x5.0mm package.

"The KSH series switches represent an economical alternative to rubber keypads, since they can be mounted using standard pick-and-place assembly equipment," stated Jerome Smolinski, Senior Product Manager, C&K Components. "The switch incorporates a high-grade silicone that delivers consistent tactile ratios over the operating lifecycle, and the moving contact design eliminates the carbon pill intermediate, giving the switches a stable contact resistance. With an operational lifecycle more than twice that of competitive devices, the KSH series switches are suitable for automotive interiors and AV systems, as well as electronic musical instrument applications."

The KSH series tactile switches are sold in 1,000 unit tape-and-reel packaging. Engineering samples of both the KSH2 and KSH4 series are currently available, with production volumes anticipated in Q1.
