Designed to save space in automotive, industrial, computer, and consumer applications, the WSHM2818 surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistor has been introduced by Vishay Intertechnology. In a compact 2818 case size, the resistor combines a high 7W power rating with a low resistance values down to 1mΩ.

Offering improved thermal management, the WSHM2818 features a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element with low TCR of less than 20ppm/°C. Although offered in a compact package size, the resistor provides 1,000-hour load life stability, and resistance to short time overload of less than ±1%. This high power-to-footprint-size ratio allows designers to save board space and create smaller end products.

The WSHM2818, which is AEC-Q200-qualified, is suitable for precision current sensing, voltage division, and high power pulse load applications. Such applications include switching regulators, current detectors, power supplies and power amplifiers in automotive electronic controls such as engine, injector, brushless DC motors, anti-lock brakes, climate, and battery management controls.

The resistor also fits into industrial controls, including down-hole test/measurement equipment for oil/gas well drilling, inverter controls for HVAC systems, motor drives and DC/DC converters for servers, VRMs for computers, and Li-ion battery safety and management.

Contributing to the resistor’s electrical performance is its all-welded construction, which produces low resistance values ranging from 1 to 100mΩ, with a tight tolerance of ±1.0%. Between an operating temperature range of -65 to +170°C, the WSHM2818 provides low inductance of less than 5nH, a high frequency response up to 50MHz, and low thermal EMF of less than 3μV/°C.

The WSHM2818, which is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay GREEN, is available in both samples and production quantities.
