Now available from DT Electronics, OKI’s mechanical multi-channel optical switches incorporate micro-optics technology to achieve a maximum of 1.5dB insertion loss, thus eliminating the need for an optical amplifier.
They also feature low power consumption, better than ±0.05dB repeatability and maximum polarisation loss of either 0.1dB or 0.15dB, depending on the number of channels. Applications include metro and access networks and CATV.

ZFALCON switches are easy to configure using general-purpose processing and control techniques and enable the construction of more cost-effective and flexible optical networks than existing switches based on planar light wave circuits and micro-machine technologies. Their latching switch action minimises power consumption and because complex control systems are not needed they can be installed in 1U units on standard 19-inch racks.

Demand for multi-channel optical switches is increasing because they allow smooth re-direction of optical fibre routing in response to changes in data traffic or network problems. In this way, they increase the efficiency of data transmission over optical broadband networks and test equipment.
2x1, 4x4 and 8x8 channel versions of ZFLACON switches are available now and smaller types with more channels are in development. The 2x1 version has an operating temperature range of -20 deg C to + 70 deg C; others operate from -10 deg C to +65 deg C.
