Murata has announced three lineup additions to its GRM series of 1206 and 1210 size Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) above 100μF. As the functionality of electronics becomes more advanced and available enclosure space is limited further, there is a growing need for compact, high-capacitance capacitors. Traditionally, polymer capacitors have been used above 100μF since such high capacitance values have not been available.

MLCCs deliver much better ESR characteristics than polymer capacitors and are more compact, so now that higher values are available MLCCs can aid to overall space reduction.

The GRM series 1206 size additions include 150 and 220μF capacitors, both of which offer a rated voltage of 6.3V. The slightly larger 1210 size adds a 330μF MLCC to the series with a rated voltage of 4V. All three devices have a M (+/20%) deviation rating and X5R temperature characteristics such that the capacitance change is no more than ±15% within a temperature range of -55 to +85°C.

Typical applications include decoupling on low voltage rails for programmable logic and processors such as used in servers, network and data communications infrastructure.
