RS Components (RS), says its DesignSpark engineering and maker community will be a gold level partner of Maker Faire UK 2018, which will take place at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne (28-29 April). Held in Newcastle annually for over a decade, the event is the largest Maker Faire in the UK.

It is one of the biggest in Europe, and brings together more than 300 do-it-yourself (DIY) technology enthusiasts in a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness.

Maker Faires provide an entertaining platform for people of all ages and backgrounds, from crafters and scientists to garage tinkerers and students, inspiring them to collaborate, share, experiment and learn from this growing community.

The DesignSpark Village at Maker Faire UK will showcase a selection of fun and inspiring projects from members of its 650,000-strong DesignSpark community, and will feature friends of DesignSpark including Dr Lucy Rogers.

There will be hands-on sessions demonstrating how to use the DesignSpark professional CAD software, tools and resources, which offer free support to engineers and makers in bringing their ideas to fruition.

“Supporting makers and innovative creators from around the world is a really important part of what we do at RS to help inspire the engineers of tomorrow,” said Mike Bray, Vice President of DesignSpark at RS. “Maker Faire UK is the ideal platform for us to engage with makers, to help them innovate and develop in whatever their field of interest.”

The Maker Faire events originated in 2006 in San Francisco, created by the publishers of MAKE, a US-based magazine that focuses on DIY projects based on electronics, computing and robotics, as well as metalworking and woodworking.

Maker Faire has since grown into a worldwide network of both flagship and independently produced events and spawned the tech-based DIY community known today as the Maker Movement.
