The roar of a car’s engine and the feel of the ride; the clear audio of a hearing aid; the drone of planes from a busy airport; the quality of a mobile phone. Sound and vibration is all around us and constantly affects our lives. Helping people solve their sound and vibration challenges is in the DNA of Brüel & Kjær - just like our iconic green instruments and our red shakers.
And it is thanks to helping customers throughout the last 70 years that we play a leading role in sound and vibration innovation today. Understanding customer problems and finding solutions to them is what gets our innovation teams excited, and what we have built our reputation upon. For our world-renowned experts there is little better than turning their sharp minds to solving someone’s problem and then hearing the response: “This is exactly what we need.”

Since the first audio analyzer in 1942, Brüel & Kjær has been creating novel solutions that people need and then delivering them to the highest specifications. The world’s first airport noise monitoring system was developed with Toulouse Airport in 1966 and now we monitor the environmental impact of many of the world’s major airports - and deliver the data to the relevant stakeholders.

With Nissan we developed our On-road simulators. Airbus was crucial in developing the world’s first aerospace surface microphones. The sound quality metrics that were developed on Isuzu’s diesel engines are now a key component of our post-processing platform PULSE Reflex. And these examples are but a few on a list that is long and quickly getting longer, because offering the largest product range in the industry is not enough for our restless minds.

Instead of standing still we are taking our dedication to excellence in sound and vibration and turning it to create the solutions to tomorrow’s problems, as our CEO Lars Rønn says, “We are already working on the future challenges of our customers, evolving from builders of high quality equipment to solvers of sound and vibration problems.”

Recently, we solved the problem of mapping sound on flying aircraft and supplied a comprehensive satellite vibration testing system complete with integrated data acquisition. Now we are working on precise 3D sound field recreation that responds to the angle of the listener’s head - among many other research areas.

To celebrate our anniversary, we are sharing many funny, interesting and unusual stories relating to sound and vibration such as Why are all Brüel & Kjær instruments green, solving the mystery of why cats purr and communicating with bees.
