Skyworks Solutions has announced that its optocouplers are providing vital connectivity functionality in implantable cardiac defibrillators from a medical device provider. Skyworks’ photovoltaic optocouplers establish the critical link between power supply circuits and control electronics. Skyworks’ family of custom and hermetic optocouplers operate effectively under extreme environmental conditions and serve a diverse set of markets and applications spanning aerospace, defense, medical and industrial.

Utilising proprietary techniques, Skyworks works closely with customers to design, test and optimise devices to meet specific requirements.

“Skyworks is enabling exciting platforms with our differentiated connectivity engines,” said Achim Soelter, general manager of Defense and Space for Skyworks. “Specifically, our advanced optocouplers support critical medical, military, space and defense applications — reflecting the important role our solutions play in enhancing everyday life.”

For over 30 years, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) have been protecting patients against dangerously erratic heartbeats. Approximately 650,000 Americans and nearly one million patients worldwide have an ICD or cardiac resynchronisation therapy defibrillator (CRT-D).
