Southampton-based electronic design automation specialist, EDA Solutions, has won the National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) 2007 award for Commitment to Training and Education. The award was presented to Paul Double, Managing Director of EDA Solutions, at the NMI’s Innovation Awards 07 event, held in the Hilton London Metropole Hotel on 8th November.
The Institute for System Level Integration (iSLI) sponsored the award and their CEO, Tony Harker, said:
“This company is a model to us all, demonstrating commitment to the future supply of skilled engineers to the industry. A company that annually employs students for summer placements, works tirelessly promoting our industry to local universities and this year set up a scheme to sponsor an analogue student. And all this from a company whose entire operation employs less than 10 staff!”

EDA Solutions is the exclusive European representative for Tanner EDA, a provider of EDA software for design, layout and verification of analogue/mixed-signal integrated circuits and MEMS devices. The company also exclusively represents MOSIS, a provider of multi-project wafer services.

Since its formation, EDA Solutions has worked closely with the University of Southampton to encourage students to take an interest in analogue electronics. The company, which has only five full-time employees, has accepted six student placements for summer holidays in recent years and is has recently agreed a one-year placement for a student. EDA Solutions is also working to set up a bursary with the University and will sponsor the latest placement student through his final year of study. As well as its work with the University, EDA Solutions is active with the NMI in promoting the re-emergence of university sponsorship to encourage more companies to take on students.

In addition to support for education, EDA Solutions has also invested heavily in training its existing staff, allowing a move into IC design and layout, thus offering further services to their Tanner and MOSIS customers.
