The scientific goal of the new Center for Functional Protein Assemblies (CPA) on the Garching Campus of the TUM is the interdisciplinary investigation of the functionalities and mechanisms of action of proteins – a key to understanding cells, tissues, and organs. Construction work will start in the spring of 2017. Now the building’s façade design has been decided on in a competition. All artistic designs are on exhibit in the building of the Faculties of Mathematics and of Informatics from December 15 to 22.

The design concept of Ina Rena Rosenthal, an artist from Rosenheim, Bavaria, will encase the façade of the new Center for Functional Protein Assemblies on TU Munich’s Garching Campus. The prize jury selected her design from among the work of seven artists invited to present their design proposals.

The façade of colored metal panels will divide the building into four horizontal bands, symbolising the four structural layers of proteins. The upward compaction stands for the increasing complexity of the structures. The course is a metaphor for constant change, for movement and development.

Interdisciplinary working groups at the TUM will explore the functions of proteins and their dynamic interactions in the new Protein Research Center. Due to its supraregional importance, the research project is being financed jointly by the German federal government and the State of Bavaria.

The research building, with an area of about 4,000 square meters and total construction costs of approximately 40 million Euros, is being planned by the architectural office Carpus + Partner in Aachen.

The project management is with the Bavarian state building authority, Staatliches Bauamt München 2. Construction work will begin in the spring of 2017, and commissioning is planned for autumn of 2019.

All submitted drafts are on exhibit in the main building of the Faculties of Mathematics and Informatics of, Boltzmannstr. 3, 85748 Garching, from 15 to 22 December 2016.
