Cypress today introduced the fully-qualified PSoC 5LP programmable system-on-chip family. The new devices provide unmatched high-performance programmable analog, the best ADCs available on an ARM Cortex-M3-based device, and the flexibility to design custom systems with 80+ pre-verified production-ready Components for the PSoC Creator IDE.

Other class-leading features include 0.5V startup with integrated Boost, 1.71-5.5V fully functional analog, and the industrys widest operating range of 0.5-5.5V. These capabilities open up new applications needing single-cell battery performance and high-precision analog to a world beyond fixed function MCUs. PSoC 5LP devices are shipping today.

When Precision Measurements Really Matter

PSoC 5LP offers programmable analog precision with differential 12-bit SARs and a 20-bit DelSig ADC supported by a class leading 1.024V 0.1% accurate internal voltage reference. The best-in-class ADCs includes 62 channels, fully functional analog from 1.71 - 5.5V and the widest input signal range from 0 - 5.5V of any ARM Cortex-M device. The wide variety of PSoC Creator programmable analog Components include OpAmps, Comparators, Trans Impedance Amplifiers, Programmable Gain Amplifiers, Mixers, Segment LCDs, CapSense touch sensing, DACs, Analog Muxes and more. All of the Components are configurable to meet individual application requirements to deliver a single chip solution.

When Low Power Isn't Enough

PSoC 5LP was designed to deliver more than just standard low power consumption. Consuming only 300 nA in Hibernate mode, the new devices can wake-up on IOs and retain the state of the CPU core, SRAM and device configuration. Ideal for single cell battery operation, Cypress's boost technology allows designers to power up and regulate on as little as 0.5V. Unlike fixed-function MCUs, PSoC allows designers to further reduce power consumption by customizing each peripheral Component so unnecessary functions do not consume any power.

When Fixed-Function MCUs Fail to Deliver

PSoC 5LP offers programmable analog and digital with flexible routing and interconnect in easy-to-use Components within PSoC Creator. Designers can easily build their own custom embedded controller, implementing standard and proprietary protocols with immunity to specification changes. With the ability to customize logic functions, peripherals, the analog front end and analog subsystems, designers can achieve greater system integration and a reduced system bill of materials. PSoC enables designers to solve complex problems easily with more than 80 pre-verified, production-ready Components.

PSoC Creator allows users to configure PSoC programmable hardware into a personalized, one-chip solution. The free IDE comes with production ready Components and APIs for easy and fast configuration of the device, and enables users to create and replicate their own custom Components.

“Precision measurement and low power consumption are critical features for embedded designers, but until now they have been mutually exclusive,” said Hassane El-Khoury, Executive Vice President of Cypress’s Programmable Products Division. “PSoC5 LP changes that, going beyond the capabilities of fixed function MCUs to enable customized, high-precision analog applications that can run from a single-cell battery.

MCUs Can’t. PSoC Can.

PSoC devices employ a highly configurable system-on-chip architecture for embedded control design, offering a flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits, controlled by an on-chip microcontroller, providing both enhanced design revision capability and component count savings. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions saving customers design time, board space and power consumption while improving system quality and reducing system cost.

The flexible PSoC resources allow designers to future-proof their products by enabling firmware-based changes during design, validation, production, and even in the field. The unique PSoC flexibility shortens design cycle time and allows for late-breaking feature enhancements. All PSoC devices are also dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to morph internal resources on-the-fly, utilizing fewer components to perform a given task.

Availability

PSoC 5LP is available today. The PSoC 5LP Development Kit (CY8CKIT-050) is also available for $99 and can be purchased online.
