Housed in space-saving μTQFN packages, Intersil’s low-voltage dual ISL54050 and quad ISL54056 single pole double throw (SPDT) analogue switches provide ultra-low, flatter on-resistance, resulting in better signal quality in battery-powered, portable and handheld equipment.
The devices save up to 72% board space compared to TDFN and TQFN packages, making more room for valuable features in cell phone applications. At 0.5mm thick, the ISL54050/56 are approximately 33% thinner than TDFN and TQFN packaged parts, they have low supply current, and can operate with low logic control signals to reduce battery drain and extend talk time while eliminating crosstalk.

The thinner packaging of the ISL54050/56 saves vertical space on the board, offering designers more flexibility to place boards back-to-back or in other space-saving configurations. With their low signal loss and distortion, they provide a clean signal for MP3 features in cell phones and have the ability to run directly off a Li-ion battery for louder ring tones. They also withstand high ESD (electrostatic discharge) levels, improving end product reliability.

The ISL54050 and the ISL54056 are bidirectional switches that can also be used as single and dual differential, 2:1 multiplexers, respectively. When operated from a 3.3V supply, the ISL54050 has a typical on-resistance of 0.27 Ohms and the ISL54056 has a typical on resistance of 0.45 Ohms and a resistance flatness of 0.03 Ohms and 0.05 Ohms respectively, resulting in very low total harmonic distortion (THD) for use in low-distortion audio paths such as in MP3 players in cell phones and CD audio devices.

Unlike competing devices where significant cross conduction current is present, the ISL54050/56 exhibit low supply current when operated with logic control signals that are lower than the device supply voltage. The devices are a reduced size upgrade of Intersil’s ISL8484 and ISL8499 dual and quad switch devices in TDFN and TQFN packages.

ON-resistance (RON) figures are, V+ = +4.3V/0.29 Ohms, V+ = +3.0V/0.33 Ohms, and V+ = +1.8V/0.55 Ohms. Other key features include a single supply operation +1.65V to +4.5V, RON matching between channels of 0.06 Ohms, a low power consumption (PD) figure of <0.45μW, a fast switching action (V+ = +4.3V) of tON 40ns and tOFF 20ns, an ESD HBM rating of >8kV, a break-before-make function, and 1.8V logic compatible.

Target applications are battery-powered, handheld and portable equipment, cellular/mobile phones, pagers, laptops, notebooks and palmtops, portable test and measurement, medical equipment, and audio and video switching.

The ISL54050 is available now in a 10-lead QFN package and the ISL54056 is available now in a 16-lead QFN package. Both parts are also available in 10 lead 1.8x1.4x0.5mm μTQFN (ISL54050) and 16 lead 2.6x1.8x0.5mm μTQFN (ISL54056) packages. The devices are Pb-free (RoHS compliant).
