Renesas Technology Europe today announced the release of a second selection of products in its wide RX Platform product line-up. The RX Platform is built around the new RX CPU and comprises the next generation of MCUs integrating the functions of Renesas Technology’s existing 16-bit and 32-bit MCU products.

The new RX62N Group and RX621 Group comprise a total of 31 individual products. These 32-bit MCUs have on-chip flash memory and enhanced communication functions, including an Ethernet controller, USB 2.0, and CAN, which are suitable for applications such as building management (climate control, lighting, security), industrial equipment such as factory automation systems, office equipment (POS peripherals) and electronic point of sales equipment (EPOS). With the RX Platform, engineers can achieve higher performance, better functionality and greater compactness in these applications. They also benefit from low system cost due to the high level of integration.

The RX62N Group is equipped with an Ethernet controller, USB 2.0 Full-Speed (Host, Function, OTG), and CAN (selectable as an option), while the RX621 Group is equipped with USB 2.0 Full-Speed (Host, Function, OTG) and CAN. The main features of the RX62N Group and RX621 Group are compatible as usual for Renesas RX Platform.

“Ethernet, USB and CAN implemented on a single chip is a key success factor in today’s ubiquitous demand for connectivity”, said Bernd Westhoff, Product Marketing at the Renesas Technology Europe CID Business Unit. “Combined with the powerful RX core with 165 DMIPS performance at 100MHz, Renesas is able to supply RX as a cost optimised solution for any application in the industrial and consumer fields.”

The RX62N and RX621 offer a range of features to meet today’s requirement for a flexible, integrated peripheral solution. These include a single precision floating point unit (FPU), enhanced timer functions with multifunction timer pulse units (MTUs), an independent watchdog timer (IWDT) that operates on an internal clock independent of the system clock, and a real-time clock (RTC) that implements clock and calendar functions.

Furthermore, a 12-bit A/D with fast conversion speed down to 1 μs is set as standard.

The devices in the RX62N and RX621 Group provide a scalable memory solution from 256 kB Flash to 512 kB Flash with up to 96 kB RAM embedded. They also include an additional independent 32 KB of data flash memory with a background operation (BGO) function that enables data to be written at the same time a program is executing. The embedded flash memory is based on the renowned Renesas MONOS (Metal Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon) technology that can be accessed at 100 MHz without wait state insertion. This enables maximum performance levels at any CPU frequency up to 100 MHz without any limitation from flash technology. These products also offer a wide range of packaging variations from 85pin LGA, 100pin LQFP, 144pin LQFP, 145pin LGA and 176pin BGA. The RX62N and RX621 achieve very low power consumption of 0.5 mA/MHz in full active mode, even though they are packed with peripherals.

To help customers shorten the development cycles of new embedded systems, Renesas, third-party suppliers as well their alliance partner network support the RX with a variety of hardware and software tools.

The RX600 series comes with a JTAG debugger interface. This enables customers to connect a Renesas E1 or E20 on-chip debugger or enable access to similar JTAG third party systems.
