Enabling engineers to save time, the Bill It! – Smart Meter RX21A polyphase meter reference platform has been released by Renesas Electronics Europe. While complying with IEC norms, the platform removes the need for engineers to design their own metrology and calibration routines, which are required for a billing polyphase meter design.

Based on Renesas’ RX21A group of MCUs, the reference platform integrates the metrology front end and the application processor in a single chip. To accommodate single-phase, split-phase and three-phase plus neutral billing electricity meters, the RX21A devices are equipped with three, four or seven independent 24-bit delta-sigma ADC. Allowing the target meter to cover a dynamic range between 10mA and 100A at an enhanced temperature range, the ADC channels feature a PGA. Exceeding the IEC62053-22, the devices cover applications better than Class 0.2S by storing calibration data in the flash.

Allowing for easy implementation and downsizing to a billing electricity meter design tailored to the customer’s needs, the Bill It! platform has been designed for a very wide target specification. The device, which fulfils all required Cenelec standards for EMC and safety, is built and supported in Europe.

Providing engineers during the design phase with all the information they need to trim and analyse the data measured by the ADC channels, the Bill It! reference platform includes an intuitive PC GUI. Both graphical feedback from the ADC data as well as prepared data after the calibration steps, frequency analysis and separation of active/reactive energy use, are covered by this.

The Bill It! polyphase meter, a CD-ROM including the embedded metrology and calibration software source code, the PC GUI, the board schematics, the BOM, Gerber files, user manual, quick start guide and the electrical connection setup needed to use the electricity meter are contained within each kit.

The Bill It! kit will be presented by Renesas at European Utility Week 2014 and electronica 2014 in hall 4 stand F26 and A6.243, respectively.
