Scalable up to 128KB non-volatile FRAM memory, the MSP430 FRAM MCU family has been expanded with 46 new devices. With integrated features such as ESI and a differential input ADC, the MSP430FR69x MCUs reduce power consumption and minimise product size by eliminating redundant components in systems.

The integrated differential input ADC consumes as little as 140 µA at 200 KSPS, while data transmission security is boosted by a  256-bit AES hardware accelerator. Designers can also leverage the integrated 320-segment LCD controller to easily add a display to their products.

The integrated ESI module, differential ADC and LCD controller make MSP430FR69x MCUs suited for smart flow metering designs for water, gas and heat. Using the company's complementary SimpleLink Sub-1 GHz CC1120 transceiver, SimpleLink Wi-Fi CC3100 wireless network processor or Wireless M-Bus connectivity solutions, designers can easily connect a new MSP430FR69x-based flow meter design to the grid. TI’s TPS61220 boost converter van also be added to optimise battery-powered systems.

Developers can debug power consumption at a function- and peripheral-level via TI's FlowESI GUI, which is easily set-up in software and EnergyTrace++ technology. The company has also released three comprehensive design, aimed to kick-start flow metering designs quicker, which leverage the integrated extended scan interface module. The reference designs for water meters, using inductive-capacitive (LC), giant magneto-resistive (GMR) or optical sensors, include complete block diagrams, user guides, bill of materials (BOM), design files and test reports.

Available immediately available in production quantities, the MCUs are priced at $4.50 in 1K units. The EVM430-FR6989 flow meter evaluation kit will be available in October for $300.
