Along with the version update v.1.4.0 for the Synergy Software Package (SSP), Renesas has released a group of microcontrollers for the SSP. The S3A1 group is suited for all applications that require a high level of security and IoT device-to-cloud connectivity. The S3A1 MCU Group devices provide a host of analogue and security features to realise a variety of embedded systems and IoT designs at a competitive price point.

The S3A1 MCUs are compatible with other Synergy MCU groups in terms of features, pins and IP. Thus they offer high scalability and accelerate the development process through code reuse.

The S3A1 group runs with an ARM Cortex-M4 processor with floating point unit (FPU) operating at up to 48MHz. Other hardware features include 1MB code flash memory, a 192KB SRAM module, and security and encryption features (AES128/256, GHASH, random number generator).

Furthermore, the microcontrollers integrate a segment LCD controller, a capacitive touch-sensing unit, numerous connectivity options, a 14-bit A/D and a 12-bit A/D converter. The maximum supply voltage is 5.5V.

For the configuration of the MCUs Renesas offers the TB-S3A1 Target Board Kit. It provides access to all pins and has standardised extension ports as well as pre-installed demo software.

The MCUs are primarily designed for IoT applications that monitor and control their environment or processes. Therefore, target applications include smart home, medicine, industrial and building automation as well as in HMI applications, energy management systems and appliances.

The microcontrollers are available as of now in four versions with different housings/pin footprints (LQFP, QFN, 100LGA, 145LGA).
