Manufactured with the company’s high-performance SuperFlash technology, which is claimed to provide the industry’s fastest erase times, Microchip has released a family of 1.8V Serial Quad I/O (SQI) SuperFlash memory devices. The 16Mb SST26WF016B performs sector and block erase commands in 18ms and full chip erase operations in 35ms.

Since competing devices require 10-20s to complete a full chip erase operation, the SST26WF016B is claimed to be approximately 400 times faster. By minimising the time required for testing and firmware updates, these fast erase times can provide significant cost savings and increase manufacturing throughput. Without the associated cost and pin count of parallel Flash, the SST26WF016B provides faster data throughput than a comparable x16 parallel Flash device

Typical standby current consumption of 10µA and typical deep power-down mode current consumption of 2.5µA help to maximise battery life in portable applications. The combination of 1.8V operation with 15mA typical active read current at 104MHz makes the SST26WF016B particularly suited for applications such as portable medical devices, Bluetooth headsets, GPS, camera modules and hearing aids.

A high-speed 104MHz 4-bit multiplexed I/O serial interface, the SQI interface enables high-data throughput in a low pin-count package and low latency execute-in-place capability. This allows programmes to be stored and executed directly from the Flash memory, eliminating the need for code shadowing on a RAM device. The SQI interface also offers full command-set backwards-compatibility to the traditional SPI protocol.

100 year data retention and endurance of over 100,000 erase/write cycles provides excellent quality and reliability. The SST26WF016B includes enhanced safety features such as software write-protection of individual blocks for flexible data/code protection and a one-time programmable 2KB Secure ID area to protect against unauthorised access and malicious read, programme and erase intentions. A JEDEC-compliant serial flash discoverable parameter table, which Contains identifying information about the function and capability of the SST26WF016B, is also provided to simplify software design.

Available now for sampling and in volume production, the SST26WF016B is supplied in 6x5mm 8-contact WSON, 8-lead SOIC and 8-ball XFBGA packages.
