STMicroelectronics has announced the availability of the new M25PX32, a 32-Mbit device that is the first of the sector, sub-sector erase Serial Flash family to be offered with Dual I/O. Whereas existing M25PE family devices features high granularity, the new M25PX family stands out thanks to its guaranteed high-speed performance.
Digital flat panels and set-top-boxes are typical applications where the improved performance and technological features of the M25PX32 will bring immediate and tangible benefits, starting with execute-in-place (XiP) features: in digital flat panels, the XiP produces increased interaction for the user, while in set-top-boxes, the improvement can be seen in the turn-on speed, where high-speed downloading of the code to RAM offers faster system power up. On a larger scale, the M25PX32 brings added value to all applications requiring higher densities, such as personal computers, optical disk drivers, and printers.

Developed in ST’s dependable 0.11um process technology, the M25PX32 represents the natural evolution of the M25P sub-sector Serial Flash family. Combining an unprecedented level of technical performance – such as improved speed of operation over the full supply voltage range – together with new technical features such as Dual I/O, the M25PX32 confirms ST’s leadership in the Serial Flash market.

In addition to guaranteed full-temperature performance, the M25PX32 distinguishes itself by its reliability. Designed to address the needs of applications requiring higher clock frequency, the device guarantees the support of a 75MHz frequency through the entire 2.7 to 3.6V supply voltage range and through the -40 degrees to 85 degrees C industrial temperature range. The Dual I/O is also significant: during the fast read phase, the dual output command allows the system to double the data transfer bandwidth, effectively clocking the NOR at the equivalent of 150 MHz, again over the full voltage range; finally, in the fast program phase both the input and output pins are used for programming the memory.

In addition to device-security features such as protection after power up, the new M25PX32 also features an additional 64-byte user-lockable, one-time programmable (OTP) area, and the possibility to set the memory as read-only.
