A series of automotive varistors, which exhibit a low leakage current of less than 1µA at 32VDC, 25°C, has been released by AVX. Tested, qualified and specified at 150°C, the CANATL varistors are particularly suitable for use in high temperature underhood automotive applications, such as transmission control units, brake control modules, data lines and bus interface units.

The AEC-Q200 qualified devices are based on the company’s patented multilayer varistor technology, which combines circuit protection and EMI/RFI attenuation functions in a single, high reliability device. The zinc oxide based ceramic semiconductor devices exhibit non-linear, bi-directional voltage current characteristics similar to back-to-back Zener diodes and an EMC capacitor in parallel. Alongside the space savings provided by enabling EMI/RFI attenuation in the off-state, the CANATL varistors offer several valuable performance advantages over diodes. These advantages include a high in-rush current capacity of 8x20µS, a high 25kV (HBM Level 6) ESD rating, a low capacitance of 10pF to minimise signal distortion, no derating over operating temperatures and fast response times. The varistors also exhibit a multi-strike capability, outstanding solderability and a FIT rate of less than or equal to 0.1 per billion hours.

Operating across a temperature range of -55 to +150°C, the devices are available in a 0603 case rated for 32VDC operating voltage. The CANATL varistors, which are RoHS compliant, are offered with Ni barrier/100% Sn terminations and packaged on 7 or 13” reels. Pd/Ag terminations for hybrid assembly are available upon request.

“By extending our trusted CAN Bus varistor offering with the CANATL series high temperature, low leakage automotive varistors, we have significantly expanded the number of applications that can benefit from the unique space savings and performance advantages inherent to AVX’s patented MLV technology,” commented Jiri Machanicek, Product Manager, AVX.
