Toshiba announce the introduction of a new three-phase brushless sensorless motor controller IC. Integrated with automotive pre-drivers, the TB9061AFNG enables cars equipped with an idling reduction system cut out to easily switch the power source for oil and engine cooling pumps from the engine to an electric motor.

Operating over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +125°C, the TB9061AFNG is perfectly suited for the very hot environments found in automotive engine compartments.

While traditional motor drivers use external Hall sensors to detect rotary position and rotation speed, the new brushless motor drive IC uses an input signal line that measures the induced voltage of the motors and three-phase motor output. Without using Hall sensors, the TB9061AFNG achieves 120° rectangular wave motor control.

Enabling significant material and system cost reductions, the new BLDC motor control IC allows for simple system configuration. Operating over a voltage range from +5.5 to +18V, the TB9061AFNG can utilise either the DC input signal or the PWM input signal to control motor rotation.

The new motor control IC features a number of diagnostic circuits and drive control functions including over current detection and a motor drive current limiter circuit, over temperature detection (both internal and external), over voltage detection, low voltage detection of VCC, motor lock detection, step out detection, and automatic return control circuits.

Sampling now, the TB9061AFNG is offered in a 7.8 mm x 7.6 mm x 1.2 mm SSOP24 package. Mass production is scheduled to start in March, 2014.
