Can vertical farming revolutionise global agriculture?
Vertical farming is the practice of growing plants indoors under fully controlled environmental conditions in many stacked layers, using artificial lighting instead of relying on the sun. By tuning the growing environment to the exact needs of the plant and using soil-free growing techniques, this method of farming can achieve yields hundreds of times higher than conventional agriculture, 365 days a year and without requiring pesticides.
Battery energy storage solutions for next-gen electric ferries
Nidec ASI, the Nidec Industrial Solutions platform belonging to the Nidec Group, has supplied battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the latest vessel developed by Brødrene Aa, a Norwegian company that builds electric ferries and ships.
AI solution to reduce CO2 emissions annually
Sulzer is collaborating with Atlantica to install its BLUE BOX advanced analytics solution on the performance-critical pumps at two solar power plants. Located 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, US, the Mojave 280 MW solar plant generates clean electricity to power approximately 90’000 households, preventing the emission of 350’000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Collaborative control over distributed energy resources
How can utilities use data centricity and a software databus to create an interoperable ecosystem of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)? RTI presents an approach based on the Data Distribution Service (DDS) set of standards, which is used by industrial companies to solve problems exactly like the challenges that DERs present in the era of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). By Erik Felt, Market Development Director for Future Grid at RTI
Poll finds low public understanding of nuclear power
Only 26% of people aged 18-24 understand that nuclear power is a low carbon source of electricity, compared with 76% for renewables such as wind and solar. This is the main finding of a new poll by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) into public attitudes.
100MW data centre powered by renewable energy
Colt Data Centre Services (DCS) has marked its new 100MW hyperscale data centre in Mumbai at a recent ceremony. Powered by renewable energy, the facility will be one of the largest hyperscale data centres in India, complementing Colt DCS’ dedicated commitment towards its international hyperscale offerings in 2020.
Bringing the green revolution to electronics
Researchers are investigating how to make electronic components from eco-friendly, biodegradable materials to help address a growing public health and environmental problem: around 50 million tonnes of electronic waste are produced every year.
Dunfermline the greenest town in the UK
Compare and Recycle has identified which are the greenest towns for recycling old and unused gadgets including items such as mobile phones, tablets, cameras or smartwatches. Most of these devices contain rare precious metal components which can be reused so devices don’t have to end up in landfill, causing pollution.
Uplifting aerospace conference heralds green future
The main thrust of the 21st annual conference of the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC) was climate change, and how the industry should help combat it.
Thin-film solar cells generate energy efficiency of 25%
Scientists from Hasselt University, imec, VITO and international partners within the PERCISTAND consortium have become the first to achieve an energy efficiency of 25% with a thin-film solar cell. This means that this wafer-thin solar cell generates as much energy as a traditional silicon solar cell.
