According to Chad Seaver, CEO of Arkis BioSciences, the new catheter will be used for insertion into a ventricular cavity of the brain for external drainage of cerebrospinal fluid in patients with elevated intracranial pressure, intraventricular hemorrhage, or hydrocephalic shunt infections.
Research establishes a timeline of obesity
Over the past decade, when investigating the factors associated with the growing epidemic of obesity in the world, scientists have identified two events that greatly contribute to weight gain. One of them is the alteration in the profile of bacteria that make up the intestinal flora. Studies published from 2005 to 2007 showed that obese people generally present a set of microorganisms that stimulate the absorption of nutrients from food.
Drone owners confident they will fly through government exams
According to new research, almost two-thirds of drone owners would welcome compulsory flying exams similar to Government proposed assessments. The Drone Usage Report 2017 compiled by drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) retailer DronesDirect.co.uk revealed 61% of drone owners would welcome a compulsory flying exam before taking to the skies with their gadget as they think it would increase public safety.
Microneedle patch dissolves 'love handles' in mice
Researchers have devised a medicated skin patch that can turn energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat locally while raising the body’s overall metabolism. The patch could be used to burn off pockets of unwanted fat such as “love handles” and treat metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes, according to researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the University of North Carolina.
Detachable coil system aids peripheral vasculature
At the ongoing Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, Medtronic has unveiled its new Concerto 3D Detachable Coil System. The device, which is now available to physicians in the U.S. and Europe, is intended to be used for embolisations in the peripheral arteries and veins. The device folds into a dense and knotty shape which helps to fill in an aneurysm, for example, similar to...

Could fibre optics be the way forward to detect faults on railways?
Fibre optic cables could make a major contribution to the safety and maintenance of railways. Installed alongside the tracks, they are capable of detecting a huge range of soundwaves that might signify the early emergence of problems, such as damage to the rails.
Next-gen spinal cord stimulator receives FDA Approval
Medtronic has announced FDA approval and U.S. launch of the Intellis platform for the management of certain types of chronic intractable pain. The Intellis platform was designed to overcome limitations with current spinal cord stimulation (SCS) systems, such as battery performance, and can power the EvolveSM workflow*, which standardises guidance and balances high-dose (HD) and low-dose (LD) therapy settings.
Connector generates greater power density in rail vehicles
HARTING has designed a new Han 34 HPR EasyCon connector for high-current transmission with a high power density, making it suited to use in rail vehicles. Han 34 HPR housings and retaining frames are designed in such a way that, for the first time ever, a connector is now available that can accommodate four 650 A contacts alongside one another in a single interface.
