Looking at the growth and development of remote operation technology
One of the most important aspects of gearing technology has always been positioning accuracy. Whether gears are used for surgical robots, bomb disposal units or subsea Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), it is important that axial motion is precise. However, this has become increasingly important in recent years. Graham Mackrell, Managing Director of precision gearing specialist Harmonic Drive UK, explains the engineering developments that ma...
Course trains users to fly drones for commercial purposes
The drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) retailer, DronesDirect.co.uk, has launched a drone training course for businesses wishing to operate drones for commercial use. The three-day course gives drone pilots full Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) accreditation, which allows users to fly drones for commercial purposes.
Emissions mapped through drone mounted sensors
Aeromon has developed a platform for rapidly mapping over 70 different industrial emissions. By deploying sensors in static, handheld and drone mounted configurations, Aeromon uses its cloud-based service to fluidly analyse emissions patterns in any industrial setting - including those that previously proved difficult to access.
ESCC has selected AEM's solid body fuses
The European Space Components Coordination (ESCC) body has selected AEM's FM12 line of solid body fuses for inclusion in the European Preferred Parts List (EPPL). The FM12 series fuses, also included on the Defense Logistics Agency Qualified Products List (QPL), are intended for use in a wide variety of aerospace applications that require the highest level of reliability.
Text-mining tool turbocharges biomedical pursuits
With about 100 lines of code, a Morgridge Institute for Research team has unleashed a fast, simple and predictive text-mining tool that may turbocharge big biomedical pursuits such as drug repurposing and stem cell treatments. The algorithm, named “KinderMiner” by its inventors, has been put to use exploring one of the largest single archives of research journal papers, Europe PubMed Central.
Diagnosing Alzheimer’s from cheek swab
3D Signatures have developed the TeloView system, a software platform that can analyse telomere patterns in cells to diagnose disease. The company recently announced the results of a clinical study, due for publication in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, in which the software could reportedly identify Alzheimer’s disease and predict if the disease was mild, moderate, or severe, based on analysing a cheek swab sample from patients.
Test strips could detect cervical cancer earlier
Purdue researchers are developing technology that could lead to the early detection of cervical cancer with low-cost, easy-to-use, lateral flow test strips similar to home pregnancy tests.
A breakthrough in the fight against female reproductive disease
Northwestern Medicine has developed a miniature female reproductive tract that fits in the palm of your hand and could eventually change the future of research and treatment of diseases in women's reproductive organs. This 3D technology - called EVATAR - is made with human tissue and will enable scientists to conduct much-needed testing of new drugs for safety and effectiveness on the female reproductive system.
Advanced robotic solutions on display at Automate 2017
On booth 270 at Automate 2017, TQ Systems will showcase its RoboDrive technology as part of its first public appearance in North America. RoboDrive motors were designed by researchers at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) for the International Space Station. TQ RoboDrive is suited for robotics because the motors are compact, are half the weight and half the power losses at the same torque as other...
