Chomerics Europe has today revealed that it has acquired new business for its shielded window products with a leading designer and manufacturer of cardiovascular medical devices. Integrating a resistive touchscreen, the EMI shielded windows are to be used for challenging operating theatre applications.

There are extremely stringent quality requirements that are crucial for medical electronic equipment designed for use in surgical environments: there can be no inclusions or entrapment of contaminants; operating theatres are well lit environments and therefore displays used must achieve maximum light transmission and have high image clarity; and shielding against electromagnetic interference is critical.

Harish Rutti, Regional Sales and Distribution Manager, Chomerics Europe, comments: “This important new piece of business clearly demonstrates our ability to develop and manufacture high performance shielded windows that adhere to the toughest quality requirements. The use of electronics and instrumentation with large displays is increasing in the life science and healthcare markets and we are delighted that we can help support the development of highly reliable pieces of equipment that are potentially lifesaving.”

At the company’s facility in Grantham, UK, the 14 inch shielded windows are constructed in a state-of-the-art controlled manufacturing environment. This specialised environment ensures that there are no inclusions or entrapment of contaminants between the various layers that are bonded together to make a shielded optical window with touchscreen. The specialist mesh and other materials used by Chomerics helped achieve light transmission performance that was significantly improved versus that of previous equipment. Shielding against EMI is a particularly important aspect of medical electronic equipment design, since failure to manage EMI effectively can severely impact the reliability of the equipment and that of products situated in the immediate vicinity.
