A second major commercialisation partnership has been announced by SmartKem to develop and mass produce commercial low power, lightweight and unbreakable electronic displays using its organic thin film transistor (OTFT) technology. The company has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with a display maker in Taiwan, just weeks after announcing a similar agreement with one of China’s leading OLED manufacturers.

SmartKem is a designer and supplier of materials for the manufacture of high performance OTFTs which enable the development of low power, robust, flexible and lightweight displays for applications including wearables and mobile. The company has recently developed OTFT design rules and a process of record for transferring the technology on to industrial grade production lines in Asia.

SmartKem’s OTFT platform consists of a series of solution coat TFT stack materials including its organic semiconductor that offers transistor performance, electrical stability and a proven drive capability for both LCD and OLED display formats.

The partnership with the Taiwanese company, which designs and manufactures optoelectronic solutions, visual displays, TFT-LCD and AMOLED displays, will enable the development and industrialisation of OTFT technology for commercial display applications.

Steve Kelly, CEO of SmartKem, commented: “To be able to report two significant partnerships in quick succession is fantastic for SmartKem and demonstrates the current momentum within this technology space.

“The commitment shown by our Taiwanese partner is a significant acknowledgement of the commercial traction that our technology has gained within the industry.

“Organic thin film transistors, based on state-of-the-art semiconductors, can now enable displays with groundbreaking advantages of being thinner, lighter, stronger, better ergonomically designed and more energy efficient.

“Working with our partners, SmartKem is having a marked impact on the global display industry, enabling differentiation and uplift in user experience across a range of display applications, including wearables, mobile and embedded displays.”
