Attempting to revolutionise smartphone user interfaces

ZTE attempted to create a totally new user experience with its Axon M smartphone. The Axon M features dual-folding screens and a fingerprint sensor on the side of the smartphone. Both features aim to provide the largest screen possible without distractions. ZTE’s attempt via the Axon M represents one of the very few to provide a tablet-like screen experience without growing the phone proportionately in a mass-produced smartphone.

VR device shipments to hit 110m by 2021

According to ABI Research, standalone VR device shipments will hit 110m by 2021. While mobile device-reliant VR shipments - for example Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream - dwarf today’s other VR device types, standalone devices will see a 405% CAGR through 2021, compared to a 42% CAGR for mobile VR.

Wireless connectivity ICs totaled more than $8 billion in 2011 and will produce revenues close to $40 billion for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, and combo ICs through 2016. Broadcom continues to dominate, owning 30% of the worldwide connectivity IC shipment volume due to its success in the rapidly growing combo IC market.

ABI Research Sees Fast Transition to 802.11ac, Crossing the 50% Threshold in 2014

Following small shipment volumes in 2012 and a significant increase in shipments in 2013, IEEE 802.11ac will emerge as the dominant Wi-Fi protocol by 2014. Only a niche subset of 802.11ac will be single-band 802.11ac, using solely the five GHz band. Most will be 802.11n/802.11ac dual-band chipsets.
