Toshiba has today introduced a new hard disk drive, an expansion of its family of sm.all form factor 2.5-inch {6.4 cm} HDDs, providing up to 500GB in a unit just 7mm in height.Combining a high-speed 6Gbit/s intelligent interface with average seek times of just 12ms, the MQ01ACF series is intended for use in laptops, ultrathin notebooks and other mobile and power-sensitive applications requiring integrated storage.

The new MQ01ACF series HDDs feature a shock sensor circuit to protect against shocks of up to 3,430 m/s2 (350G) when the drive is in use. The new Toshiba HDDs also feature a carriage lock mechanism is automatically activated when powered down. This protects againstshocks of up to 8,820 m/s2 (900G).

In order to protect the integrity of data readout against vibrations while the drive is in operation, the new small form factor hard disk drives also incorporate vibration sensors. These enable unrivalled performance.

Still enabling the high-speed performance advantages provided by the drive’s 7,278 rpm rotational speed, the drive is equipped with an adaptive power mode that reduces power consumption to 0.8W typical (low power idle) for the MQ01ACF050.

The new family of sleek HDDs will be available from the end of August across Europe in the following models; the MQ01ACF050 (500GB) and the MQ01ACF032 (320GB).
