Texas Instruments is supporting the industry's highest screen resolution up to 4K2Kp60 with the new SN65DSI86 interface IC. Providing an MIPI DSI bridge between the graphics processor and embedded DisplayPort panel, the new interface IC features its dual MIPI DSI channels in a 20% smaller 5 mm x 5mm package. Offering greater design flexibility for space-constrained mobile applications, this makes the SN65DSI86 ideal for tablets, clamshell notebooks and all-in-one PCs.

Offering system designers the flexibility to support a variety of different panels and resolutions, the SN65DSI86 provides an optimised MIPI DSI bridge to eDP. It supports 4096 px 2160 px with 18 bits per pixel at 60 frames per second, and 1920px x 1200 px WXUGA 3D resolution with 24 bpp at 120 fps with odd/even or left/right configurations. System battery life is greatly extended thanks to the ultra-low power features of the SN65DSI86: power consumption of less than 200-mW active, 30-mW suspend power, and 3-mW shutdown.

Featuring four dual-channel MIPI DSI lanes supporting 1.5 Gbps, TI's new interface IC is capable of a maximum input bandwidth of 12 Gbps. This delivers the highest data throughput performance compared to competitive solutions. Allowing system designers to use fewer wire and board traces between the device and LCD panel, it also supports seven data rates up to 5.4 Gbps HBR2 thanks to eDP version 1.4 compatibility. Enabling longer traces between the graphics processor and SN65DSI86, and longer cables from the bridge chip to LCD panel, the new IC features a combination of receive equalization, selectable transmitter de-emphasis and output swing. This allows for flexible component location.

The SN65DSI86’s 1.5-Gbps DSI data rate delivers more than 30% higher bandwidth, compared to competiting devices. Texas Instruments also offers a wide variety of tools and support in order to accelerate development with the SN65DSI86. These include an IBIS model, DSI tuner software and hardware implementation guide.

Available now in a 5mm x 5 mm 64-ball PBGA package, the SN65DSI86 is priced at $5.61 (USD) each in 1,000-unit quantities.
