The CX24118 and CX24116 from Conexant, which form the front end (tuner and demodulator) for set top boxes supporting DVB-S2. The CX24118A Digital Satellite Tuner RFIC is Conexant’s third generation direct down-conversion satellite tuner intended for high-volume digital video, audio and data receivers.

The CX24118A offers excellent phase noise performance and very low implementation loss, required for advanced modulation systems such as 8PSK and DVB-S2.

With a footprint measuring only 6mm x 6mm, the single-chip RF-to-baseband satellite receiver benefits from Zero-IF architecture which eliminates the need for image reflect filtering. It also has variable baseband filters for optimal interference rejection. The CX24118’s auto-tuning machine eradicates the need for software calibration.

The Conexant CX24116 DVB-S2 Demodulator and Forward Error Correction decoder is based on an open DVB-S2 standard and offers an alternate path for service providers to use advanced modulation (8PSK) with LDPC/BCH FEC. This will enable increased satellite throughput that can be used to offer additional programming and services.

The CX24116 can demodulate and decode signals transmitted in accordance with the new DVB-S2, DVB-S and DIRECTV specifications. It has an automatic acquisition algorithm that searches and acquires the carrier within a }10 MHz range during initial acquisition and performs a smart search to reacquire under fade condition. The CX24116 has an on-chip microcontroller for fast-signal acquisition and system monitoring.

In addition, the on-chip microcontroller saves software integration time by minimising the external driver code. The CX24116 also benefits from integrated SNR and BER monitors for channel-performance measurements that simplify production testing.

Managing Director of TDC, Jerry Sandys comments, “With these exceptional products, Conexant enables high performance and cost-optimised front end solutions for the expanding DVB-S2 market.”
