Specifically designed for wearable devices such as activity monitors, smart watches, bracelet- and glasses-type devices, Toshiba unveil the TZ1001MBG. This application processor integrates sensing, data processing and wireless transmission into a single package in order to reduce mounting area and help downsize wearable devices.
The processor features an accelerometer to measure motion, a processor to handle the data acquired by the sensor, and 8Mb flash memory to store data, as well as RF circuitry and a Bluetooth Low Energy controller that supports low power communication. A high performance 48MHz ARM Cortex-M4F with DSP and floating point processing unit allows a combination of data from multiple sensors, internal and external, to improve sensor accuracy.
The product integrates high resolution ADCs that can convert analogue signals from external sensors, such as pulse wave and electrocardiogram (ECG) devices, into digital data, and deliver it to the internal processor. Transfer of raw and processed data to external equipment, such as smartphones and tablets, is supported through the USB, SPI, I2C, UART, 12bit ADC and 24bit Delta-Sigma ADC protocols.
The TZ1001MBG application processor also offers an original low power consumption design, enabling use in wearable devices that require long battery runtimes. The device also provides a gyroscope and a magnetometer.
Sample shipments will start in May, with mass production scheduled to start in September 2014.
