USB 3.1 Type-C compliant interface connector saves PCB space

Hirose has announced a mid-mount USB 3.1 Type-C connector featuring a compact footprint and a depth of only 8.5mm. The shorter design creates additional PCB space for optimising antenna design and allows for larger batteries capacity. By comparison, conventional Type-C connectors are significantly longer, up to 9.4mm, which consumes valuable PCB space.

The CX70 series USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C compliant interface connector supports 5Gb/s for high-speed applications.

The Hirose hybrid CX70 series simplifies retrofit and repair operations by utilising both SMT and through hole soldering. The hybrid design also facilitates automated optical inspection and eases reworking of the solder terminal joints with a visible lead design. As a USB 3.1 Type-C connector, it features a symmetrical mating design that allows for reversible plug insertion.

Rick van Weezel, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Hirose Electric USA, commented: "The USB Type-C interface offers customers a universal connector that is capable of twice the throughput of USB 3.0 with far more power. The small foot print and hybrid mounting design make the CX70 series an ideal choice for a wide range of consumer, portable and other devices that can utilise the USB 3.1 capabilities for speed and power."

The mid-mount, 24-position CX70 series USB 3.1 has a rating of 5A for a total of 100W of power.
