Lapp's CAT 5 Cable Range Meets the EtherSound Standard
Lapp has announced a range of cables designed to meet the EtherSound standard, the open standard for networking digital audio. Fully compliant with the Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3), EtherSound is designed to make the most of the investment in technology by computing and telecommunications corporations on behalf of the professional audio industry.
Lapp’s new ETHERLINE FD CAT 5 cable, has been specially designed to meet the standard - up to 64 audio channels at 24 Bit/s with 48 KHz scanning rate - while the ETHERLINE FD P CAT 5 cable is more robust yet still highly flexible.

ETHERLINE FD CAT 5 cables are available ready to use with pre-assembled ETHERCON RJ 45 connectors from Neutrik in a wide variety of standard lengths from 5 m to 100 m. The cable is also available by the metre. For customers who want to assemble the cables themselves, Lapp also supplies the compatible field connectors – type RJ45 CAT 5 FM45 – which can be connected to the cable without tools.

According to Lapp’s Matt Ansell, professional audio applications such as live sound, recording and broadcast productions place huge demands on the cables industry. “With EtherSound, input-to-output transmission time is six samples (125 microseconds at 48 kHz), regardless of the number of channels transmitted”, says Ansell “And EtherSound also provides bi-directional transmission, high data capacity at mixed sample rates and powerful control functions. We have designed and produced our ETHERLINE cable range to meet these exacting criteria and will continue to keep pace as the standard evolves.” Adds Ansell.
