Combining a small size and light weight with high reliability and a long operating life, the 18-position 3800 series I/O connector has been introduced by Hirose Electric. The device is suitable for cable and docking station applications within the consumer, industrial, medical and POS sectors.

Featuring a highly durable and reliable contact structure, the I/O connector provides stable contact resistance and eliminates contact stubbing, even with 20,000 mating cycles. This spring contact structure also prevents contact buckling and reduces contact shaving.

To establish a ground system to protect vital internal electronics from potential surges, the 3800 series I/O connector utilises a sequential mating system. A pushbutton locking system with tactile click ensures that the mating process is properly completed.

Featuring a thick metal shell, the device protects against rough mechanical operation as well as EMI.

For easy attachment, the I/O connector features a one-piece, molded plastic hood. The need for overmolding is eliminated by the plug assembly, reducing assembly time and cost.

The I/O plug is available in a cable mount or as a vertical PCB version, which is suitable for cradle applications. The cradle version features a staggered PCB layout, allowing for easy solder joint inspection.

The 3800 series I/O connector has a rated current of 1.5A for contacts 1 and 18, and 0.5A for contacts 2 to 17. Operating across a temperature range of -40 to +85°C, the device has a rated voltage of 125VAC.

Measuring 34.1x23.6x 9mm, the 3800 series I/O connector is suitable for use in POS terminals, wireless radio communication devices, tablet PCs, medical handsets, digital cameras and personal navigation devices.

"The reliable 3800 series I/O connector is designed to handle the wear and tear of frequent mating cycles. Tested to more than 20,000 mechanical operations, the size, weight, protective sequential mating system and rugged metal shell make the 3800 series connector suitable for handheld and portable devices," commented Rick van Weezel, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Hirose Electric USA.
