Enabling the easy integration of the xPico WiFi device server with the Raspberry Pi SBC, the xPico WiFi Pi Plate expansion board has been released by Lantronix. Supporting simultaneous Soft AP and Client mode, WiFi connection management and QuickConnect, the xPico WiFi Pi Plate completely offloads WiFi connectivity for the Raspberry Pi. The expansion board, which features an easy to use interface, has a low power consumption, consuming 6uA in standby.

Designed to promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools, the Raspberry Pi is a small SBC. Powered by a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, it features an ARM1176JZF-S 700MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, 512MB RAM and wired Ethernet. For booting and persistent storage, an SD card is used rather than a built-in hard disk or SSD.

Providing a low power, full IP stack, complete device server solution, the xPico WiFi device is a pin and form factor compatible member of the xPico product family. The device, which has a 24x16.5mm footprint, provides direct access to data and equipment via any mobile device. Easily configurable, the WiFi device allows for easy points of access while maintaining a secure network through simultaneous soft-AP and client mode.

"The Lantronix xPico WiFi Pi Plate for Raspberry Pi is the only expansion board that supports direct connectivity between smartphones/tablets and the Pi, while simultaneously allowing communication with cloud services,” said Vishal Kakkad, Director of Product Marketing, Lantronix. “Whether you’re a developer, design engineer, students, professor, or hobbyist – the xPico WiFi Pi Plate allows you to focus on your main applications, without having to worry about wireless stack integration and wireless connectivity management. With this offering, design engineers and customers are able to leverage Lantronix core enterprise-class products and technologies for their prototype or hobby designs that rely on the Raspberry Pi.”

The xPico WiFi Pi Plate expansion board is available now and priced at $59.00 (approx £37.00).
