Education has always been one of the key focus areas for Microchip Technology Inc., one of the leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions. It announced its first scholarship awards programme in India to recognize budding talent in embedded systems design and electronic engineering and provide upcoming talent the opportunity to work on the latest technology in embedded architecture and awarded 22 students from various colleges. In the first year, students from IIT Chennai, IIT Delhi, NIT Kurukshetra, PES College (Bangalore), Manipal Institute of Technology (Karnataka), SDM Institute of Technology (Ujire), Nam Chand College of Engineering, Panipat, Haryana and K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (Mumbai) have been chosen for scholarships.
The students have worked on innovative projects using the Microchip PIC® MCUs such as microcontroller controlled wheelchair for physically impaired, RFID card reader for multiple end applications, GPS System for student ‘Formula 1’ car race, etc. Ramesh Babu, Microchip’s sales manager in India, awarded the certificates and the scholarship prizes to the students at an award ceremony held recently.

Ramesh Babu, Microchip’s sales manager in India, said, “Am delighted at the opportunity to interact with bright talent from across India. Microchip is deeply concerned about taking the latest technology to the benefit of the society at large and student community in particular as most universities teach outdated and age-old embedded architectures. Microchip is also committed in promoting entrepreneurship among student community. The Scholarship program has been conceived as a means to encourage India’s large and bright engineering talent to learn and undertake work in the latest semiconductor technology. This will equip them better in responding to current market requirements and excel in product innovation which in turn will lead to India cementing its potential as a R&D/innovation hub of choice in this space globally.”

Education has always been one of the key focus areas for Microchip and the scholarship program adds to the growing list of it’s initiatives in the talent development and training arena in India. The others being the annual MASTERS conference for engineering students, hardware and software professionals held for the seventh year in a row in 2010 and the second Annual Embedded Designers’ Forum Technical Training Series running currently across 9 cities in India. Microchip remains committed to investing in talented, young electronic engineers.
