Maxis Berhad (Maxis), Malaysia's leading integrated communications provider, today announced that it has selected Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, as its exclusive supplier for its Next-Generation High-Speed Internet network, including the building and managing of a full-service FTTx network using GPON technologies. This will offer Maxis subscribers fresh fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) services, which will include High Speed Internet services after its completion within the year.
An agreement was inked on 19 August in Kuala Lumpur to formalise the partnership between Maxis and Huawei. Under the agreement, Huawei will deliver an end-to-end turnkey services package that includes active and passive equipment, holistic ODN (Optical Distribution Network) designs, and construction management for the construction of Maxis' Next-Generation High-Speed Internet network.

Upon completion of the project, a network of homes in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bahru will be connected on a last mile basis, using fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) wired technologies. In addition to designing and building the active network infrastructure, Huawei will also manage the FTTH network for three years.

Maxis' Chief Operating Officer Jean-Pascal van Overbeke said, This continues Maxis' commitment to having the best network in the country, in order to deliver next-generation services which will grow the quality of life. The Next-Generation High-Speed Internet network is part of Maxis' commitment to providing over 12 million customers with the richer experience, and is integral to delivering an array of products and services which will reach into the areas of commerce, education, health, entertainment and so much more. Our strategic partnerships will continue to deliver to our customers, the best that communications technology and human creativity can offer.

As part of the Next-Generation High-Speed Internet initiative, Maxis has conducted rigorous testing of FTTH technology, over the 10,000 KM of optic fibre already in place. This represents a key addition to the present count of nearly 7,000 mobile base station sites. A successful rollout allows the business model to focus on customised and creative solutions, such as on-demand services seamlessly experienced at home, at work and wherever a customer may be, online on mobile devices, computers, or TVs and set-top boxes.

With overall strengths and deep experience in the fields of mobile, fixed and IP networks, Huawei is well positioned to be a preferred partner to fully support operators' All-IP network transformations. With this partnership, Huawei is committed to the construction of the most advanced fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) network offering Maxis customers seamless FMC high speed internet services. Leveraging on global leadership in the deployment of end-to-end FTTx solutions, Huawei plans to build out a top-notch broadband network throughout Malaysia for Maxis within 2010, which will also feature eco-friendly micro base stations. Upon completion of such a network, Maxis subscribers can expect original fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) services including high speed internet access, said Mr. Yao Fu Hai, President of Global Technical Service, Huawei.

The signing ceremony and partnership celebration also included an exchange of tokens. From Huawei to Maxis, a miniature model symbolising the gift of two telepresence systems; and from Maxis to Huawei, a pewter plaque ornamented with goldfish coated in true 24K gold, symbolising good fortune for the community and the realisation of a dream.

Concluded Maxis' Executive Vice President and Head of Network & Technology, Mark Dioguardi, The Maxis network continues to be transformed at a focused rate, integrating our state-of-the-art mobile network with a high-speed internet network to produce the country' s only fixed-mobile communications ecosystem of its kind, scalable to deliver fully converged services well into the future. With this partnership we are widening our next-generation broadband footprint to offer homes and enterprises, a new generation of services delivered through a single infrastructure combining both high-speed fibre and our extensive 3G wireless broadband network.

Maxis will be rolling out High-Speed Internet services in selected locations in Klang Valley soon. Those interested in the Maxis High-Speed Internet service can register their interest at maxis.com.my/broadband.
