In recent years Lithuania has drawn significant attention and interest from the international business community and unleashed tremendous potential as an investment and outsourcing destination. The major benefits of what the country has to offer are primarily enjoyed by the high added-value and demanding industries mainly, but not limited to: automotive, medical & life sciences, ICT, financial services.

Having strong business-related foundations, Lithuanian OED and OEM entities have also built strong global presence, particularly in the laser, fibre optics, innovative home, office and active leisure solutions.

There are several critical criteria that paved the path to the first international successes of the country and probably will play major roles in the further strategies.

Lithuania operates a world-class, reasonably early developed ICT infrastructure, which enabled a significant share of the population to encounter wide know-how and global trends instantly. The features ICT infrastructure are best described in figures: the country operates the fastest public WiFi in the world - confirmed by Rotten WiFi tests in 2014 - and is ranked first in fulfilling business requirements for ICT by IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, 2015. Lithuania is also ranked number one inside EU for fibre-to-premises penetration by Fibre to the Home Council, 2015 and has one of the most affordable fixed broadband services in the European Union by Global Information Technology Report, 2015. As a result of all above mentioned – Lithuania has the highest ICT literacy inside EU, where 97% of students obtain ICT skill in secondary education schools confirmed by Digital Agenda for Europe.

Country has built a favourable business environment with secure and obstacle-free new business introduction process, mitigated risks and openness to international cooperation. As well as being an active member of European Union and NATO, the country is also a member of OECD and disposes of tax treaties with 50 major markets, including the USA, Peoples Republic of China and Russia (Ministry of Finance, 2015). The scale of international participation and cooperation provides free of excess liabilities movement of business operations virtually globe-wide.

Inevitably, the greatest asset that drives the country’s capabilities is talented and skillful people. Lithuania is ranked number one in Central Eastern Europe for University-Industry collaboration in R&D and top three in CEE for quality of mathematics and science education by WEF Global Competitiveness Report 2014-2015-2016. In addition, Lithuania is number one in CEE for mathematics, science and technology graduates per capita by Eurostat.

Commercial and academic/scientific partnerships are suitable synergy platforms for win-win situations and do provide young people with insights of what is of the most necessity in labour market. Lithuania is number five inside EU for having a population speaking at least one foreign language and number seven for at least two foreign languages by European Commission, 2012. As a result, professionals of the country possess certain sets of skills, positive mindset, ‘can do’ attitude and determination to grow.

In combination, these features and capabilities make Lithuania strongly-driven, trustworthy partner in Europe and beyond, with particular benefits for technology industries.
