With one exhibition hall devoted entirely to power supply technology and solutions, electronica 2010 will once again present the largest number of power supply manufacturers gathered together in a single venue. electronica 2010 will be held at the New Munich Trade Fair Center from November 9th to 12th and will cover technologies, products and applications across the whole spectrum of the electronics industry from semiconductors and EMech components, test instruments and wireless systems, to embedded devices, PCB related services, optoelectronics and power sources.
Practically every significant manufacturer and distributor of power supply products has reserved space in Hall B2 and will be presenting power solutions ranging in size from small plug-top units for charging and powering portable devices, to large multi-megawatt inverters designed to convert the output of solar and wind powered renewable energy systems.

Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of power supplies designed to meet the requirements of the Energy Star® program as well as many examples of the latest thinking in inverter technology as consumers and businesses adopt renewable energy solutions to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint. The Energy Star program was created in the United States and has since been adopted in many parts of the World including the European Union. Power Supplies that carry the Energy Star logo have demonstrated that they use less energy in operation particularly in “sleep mode” and can reduce the total cost of ownership of products and systems including computers, computer peripherals and home appliances.

Of particular interest to those who build or specify data centers or server farms will be the first showing of several AC/DC front-ends developed to meet the efficiency levels of the 80 PLUS® Climate Savers program. 80 PLUS is a certification and incentive program funded and promoted by energy efficiency organizations and electric utilities to encourage users to specify and then integrate more energy efficient power supplies into IT equipment and servers. Within the 80 PLUS certification program, power supplies are tested and then graded according to their efficiency levels. They are then given bronze, silver, gold or platinum certification with platinum requiring efficiency levels of up to 94% across multiple load conditions. Several manufacturers will be showing 80 PLUS platinum front-ends which, although more expensive at first, will allow users to save on energy costs while reducing the carbon footprint of energy-hungry server farms and IT centers.

Many exhibitors are planning to announce, or show in public for the first time, a number of new developments designed to raise the performance bar in power density, efficiency and price/performance.

15W/cuin
Power-One plans to share its booth with its distributor Trenew Electronic AG and will be giving visitors the first chance to see a key new product range. It is a family of modular units which has just been announced. The first models to be made available provide up to 1500W from a low profile 1.6in (40mm) high unit which is said to be 35% lower than many other products on the market. As well as the low profile, the LPM615 provides an industry leading 15W/cuin power density – a 25% improvement over the best units currently available. In addition to packing more power into less space, the LPM615 gives users the chance to specify a power supply that exactly meets their voltage and current requirements. It’s modular design accepts up to six output modules with trimmable outputs from 2 to 54VDC. (B2 505)

Military/Aerospace
French power specialist Gaia Converter will be demonstrating its size and efficiency credentials with a complete Modular Power Architecture range of DC/DC converters and EMI Filters for Aerospace and MIL applications. These very compact, high efficiency, high reliability components offer power conversion, transient and spike suppression, EMI filtering, safety and hold-up solutions. All Gaia components meet the major MIL, Transport and commercial safety and EMC standards required for use in rugged and harsh environments. (B2 324)

Higher Density Compact PCI
Gresham Power Conversion plans to show the latest addition to its leading range of Compact PCI power supplies. The cPCI-6U-600 provides up to 600W of output power and has been developed by Gresham in response to growing market demands for ever increasing power from the 6U cPCI footprint. Gresham believes its cPCI-6U-600 now leads the market in output power allowing users to develop higher density systems in the cPCI format. (B2 349)

Medical Power
When SL Industries merged Condor Power and Ault to form SL Power Electronics, a company was established that could provide a very wide range of medically approved power sources for both internal and external applications. Today, the company is also a significant provider of Power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions as well as products for the industrial, IT and communications sectors. New products expected to be on show at electronica 2010 will include new Ault branded ranges of level V energy level rated external power supplies rated from 10 to 220W in both medical and Commercial versions . Other products will include two internal high-power units for industrial applications. These are modular 3 phase 4kW and PFC 1.8 kW units with EN60950 approvals and visitors can also expect to see a new Condor branded 400W medical / commercial internal power supply. (B2 627)

Military Power
Powerstax will be unveiling its TVS1000 Rugged UP-Converter which provides COTS & MOTS power from vehicle alternators and or batteries for mobile communications and jamming systems. The TVS1000 offers up to 1000W of DC output power and maintains maximum output efficiency over a very wide operating temperature range for use in Military Tactical Vehicle Systems or Non-Tactical Vehicle Security Systems. Fast turnaround of projects is possible using Powerstax’s industry leading high power F501 “full-brick” DC:DC Converters. These patented, ultra-high efficiency and very flexible converters have been designed to provide both conventional step-down conversion as well as the more unusual step-up conversion. The key to this is Powerstax’s patented “integrated magnetic” which combines the transformer and inductors for the converter on a single assembly providing high efficiency conversion and facilitating custom voltage configurations. Power Systems
Unipower Corporation is well known for its high-density, low profile and hot swap power sources for datacoms, telecoms and industrial sectors. Just announced and expected to be on display is a 1U high sine wave inverter family for mission-critical applications. The Scimitar units are 1kVA and 2kVA sine wave inverters designed for 19in rack systems and capable of producing a 115 or 230VAC output from a 12, 24 or 48VDC power source. Unipower products can be seen on the Aptronic booth. (B2 465)

LED Power
Excelsys Technologies will be showcasing the latest additions to its high efficiency LED driver power supplies with Dimming control. The product range covers 25W to 300W with high efficiency levels of up to 95%, a waterproof IP67 rating, dimming control and constant voltage and current.
Excelsys will also be showcasing additions to its medical EN60601-1 approved power supplies offering. Boasting over 91% efficiency in the most compact package, the EXM400 claims new industry standards in term of size, efficiency, technical performance. (B2 414)
