UK chemical company and designer and developer of semiconductors for electronic displays, SmartKem, has signed a landmark deal which will lead to full commercialisation of its organic thin film transistor (OTFT) technology.

The contract will see complete technology transfer, including production line deployment and supply of materials, to a Taiwanese display maker by September this year to enable the mass manufacture of low power, lightweight, flexible displays.

Steve Marsh, SmartKem’s Chief Business Officer, said: “This financial deal represents a breakthrough moment for both the display industry and SmartKem. It is the first significant milestone in the commercialisation of our semiconductor technology for commercial display applications such as mobiles and wearables.

“The commercialisation deal is a crucial element to achieving our long-term business goals and in bringing pioneering science and technology to display manufacturing. The partnership underlines the commercial traction that our technology brings to the industry and its potential to generate significant value for our partners.”

SmartKem’s OTFT platform consists of a series of solution coat TFT stack materials, including its organic semiconductor that offers supposedly unprecedented transistor performance, unbeatable electrical stability and a proven drive capability for both LCD and OLED display formats.
