The dedicated Amazon EDI solution, Amazon Business Integration by AdvanceFirst has welcomed news of the marketplace’s first ever UK public sector deal as an opportunity for UK sellers, despite some suggesting it could be a negative for local firms.
“Amazon is already successfully working with the public sector in the USA and, rolling out the same service in the UK further bolsters the B2B marketplace. This can only be a good thing for Amazon sellers,” Peter Thomas, Managing Director of Amazon Business Integration said.
“The Amazon Business marketplace is already giving smaller businesses a new outlet to sell a huge range of products from laptops to toilet rolls and with a confirmed UK public sector contract, Amazon sellers now have an opportunity to make more sales that would otherwise perhaps been out of reach due to the complicated and time-consuming tender and procurement process across the public sector.
“This opens up a brand new avenue to reach public sector departments and is a great opportunity for Amazon businesses to scale.”
Amazon’s five year deal with the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation will see local authorities using the Amazon Business marketplace for purchasing, an agreement which could equal more than £1m in sales per year. The platform will mean a host of public authority departments in Yorkshire, including education, emergency services and social care will purchase through Amazon Business.
Amazon Business serves a range of businesses with competitively priced B2B products but, its Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation is thought to be its largest deal yet. The B2B marketplace has dozens of business product categories, ranging from computers and office supplies to power tools, safety equipment, kitchen essentials and cleaning products.
Thomas added: “While some have said this agreement takes business away from local firms, we see it as an opportunity for more local businesses to actually supply local authorities. The reality is that most local suppliers probably weren’t in a position to supply local authority departments prior to the Amazon Business Agreement. Now, using the dedicated B2B marketplace, it’s much easier to get in front of local authority buyers. It’s telling that Amazon was the only viable contractor on the market for the job, according to the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation – and that means all of that buying power gets diffused down to Amazon Business sellers.”
