The Queen’s Award winning Newtons4th has launched the SFRA45, a handheld instrument designed especially for field testing the frequency response of step down transformers against the standards laid down in IEC60076-18.
All transformers have a ‘fingerprint’ that describes their frequency response and is measured and recorded by the manufacturer using sweep frequency response analysis prior to the device leaving the factory. Using an SFRA45 to test the frequency response of large transformers in the field, engineers can compare their results to the manufacturer’s fingerprint. Deviations can indicate a fault with the transformer, such as problems with the insulation or coolant. The SFRA45 thus allows the user to confirm proper functioning or to diagnose the presence of problems that may require further investigation and servicing.

Created with the help of leading transformer manufacturers, the SFRA45 is robust, portable and easy to use. It features a rugged metal casing, a large colour screen and a simple interface that allows the user to perform complete sweeps then view or store the results without the need for a PC or laptop. As is typical of an N4L instrument, the SFRA45 offers class leading specifications including basic wideband accuracy to 0.02db and phase accuracy to 0.05 degrees. It also features a built in LCR meter.

Newtons4th supply the SFRA45 in a flight case with all the required cables and clamps, including earth braids. Each item has been especially designed to accompany the instrument and ensure its reliable use in the field. Stuart Chappell, Managing Director at N4L, said:

‘We always intended to bundle the SFRA45 with suitable accessories in order to provide a complete set of equipment, but during development we became increasing dissatisfied with the performance of the existing options. Eventually, we decided to design our own; this was the best way to ensure the safety, ease of use and accurate readings we wanted. These additional items are an important

part of the package and are supplied along with the instrument, all in a fitted flight case. Everything you need is there and ready to go.’

Although the SFRA45 can be used completely autonomously, PC software is provided in the form of the SFRAComm application. This allows remote control of the instrument, as well as a variety of database functions for recording and comparing sweeps.

David Sheath is General Manager at Caltest Instruments, who distribute N4L instruments in the UK. He said:

‘Newtons4th have done it again with another instrument that combines an excellent technical specification, a versatile set of features and an intuitive, easy to use interface. The quality of their

products is now well established and we are sure that the SFRA45 will prove a popular choice with all engineers involved in testing large, step down transformers in the field. We believe that one transformer manufacturer is actually looking at supplying these instruments as standard with their own devices. They are obviously impressed with what the SFRA45 can do.’
