The new Yokogawa AQ7275 PON-OTDR is a passive optical network (PON) version of Yokogawa’s highly successful AQ7275 portable optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR).
The new instrument is designed to overcome the problems traditionally encountered in FTTH (fibre to the home) networks incorporating passive optical components such as 1 x 32 or 1 x 64 splitters. Under normal conditions, the big losses in the trace data across the splitter can compromise the accuracy of the measurements, but with the PON-OTDR the smooth, low-noise trace ensures good-quality measurements.

Three models of the AQ7275 PON-OTDR are available to support wavelengths of 1310, 1550 and 1625 nm, allowing use at both the installation and in-service maintenance stages. A filter option for the 1625 nm version makes it possible to directly check the inline optical network in troubleshooting applications.

A real-time mode function offers a rapid test capability that makes it easy to check the PON network condition within a period of one second. It also allows the user to change parameters such as wavelength, distance and pulse width during real-time operation. All versions of the AQ7275 PON-OTDR offer a maximum dynamic range of 40 dB.
