Accelerating software development by finding code bugs faster is quite challenging for systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) because of multithreaded software, multiple processing cores of different types and other factors.  A new eBook published by ASSET InterTech explains System Trace Macrocell (STM), a relatively new code tracing capability that gives much more visibility into changing system states so that the causes of bugs becomes more apparent.

“The old model of simply tracing the executed instruction stream is far from sufficient to understand what is going on within the SoC,” said Larry Traylor, author of the eBook and vice president of Arium software debug and trace tools for ASSET. “However, real-time tracing is still one of the most effective tools available for finding the root-causes of catastrophic symptoms. STM is a newer trace element which, when integrated into an ARM CoreSight trace structure, can provide the added event and data value tracing necessary to render and observe changes in the state of the system.” Titled “Debug and Trace Using ARM System Trace Macrocell (STM) the new eBook is available now on the ASSET website
