In this lecture and lab low-power experts Cymbet will present a discussion on ultra-low-power solutions for wearable technology & the IoT.

In this lecture will present:

- Basic design requirements for a vast span of exciting new embedded-system applications
- Theory, technology and techniques for achieving the ultra-low-power operation required by embedded systems that people can wear
- Methods for obtaining system power using the latest energy harvesting technology

Because many new embedded designs specify long-term standalone operation, relying on small batteries or energy harvesting techniques (solar, motion, etc.) for power, this session details design methods and MCU features that enable untended, uninterrupted system operations for months, years, or decades.

For example, it shows that active-mode power consumption can be minimized by utilizing the Clock control, Halt and Snooze modes and special peripherals, and by making DMA/DTC data trans- fers. Additionally, the discussion shows how to reduce current drains at the system level. To emphasize real-world relevance, the miniscule current drains that RL78 MCUs make possible in typical embedded designs are clearly demonstrated.
