The need for oil exploration and mining companies to develop and make their own DC/DC converters capable of operating in highly aggressive environments in order to power the electronics in wire lines and logging tools, is no longer required due to the development of a new family of DC/DC converters which are now available from Solid State Supplies.
These extra rugged converters were not in general production until IR’s HTA series, incorporating field tested electrical and mechanical designs, and proprietary manufacturing processes, had been specifically developed to operate reliably under these challenging environments.

Now, readily available for the first time as commercial off the shelf (COTS) components, the HTA series offers the industries a cost effective design solution that facilitates system integration with the shortest time to market.

Electronic instruments for subsurface applications, specifically for the oil industry, are frequently exposed to extremely high friction generated temperatures while drilling, along with those encountered at depth and the specific geology of a location being explored. The temperatures are usually well over 150ºC and in many instances reaching 200ºC or more.

Capable of providing up to 20W of output power over the extreme case temperatures of -35ºC to +185ºC, the HTA Series is available in single and dual output configurations. Input and output are galvanically isolated to protect the output loads from catastrophic system failures at the input side and to provide the flexibility of stacking several converters to obtain a higher output voltage. The converters are hermetically sealed microelectronic based hybrids,

Key design features of the HTA include small size, light weight and high tolerance to environmental stresses with wide temperature extremes and severe shock and vibration levels. Environmental qualification test reports are available. All internal components have been carefully evaluated and characterised to insure a reliable operation under the intended operating environments. Design analyses including electrical stress and thermal, are also available.

Operational input voltage is 150 to 250V DC and the single and dual output models include 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V, ±5V, ±12V, and ±15V versions. The HTA Series has an internal EMI filter to reduce noise conducted back to input lines and are configurable in series for higher voltage and higher power output. High efficiency - to 76% - the converters have 100MW @ 500VDC isolation to protect loads and prevent catastrophic system failure.

Other safety features include under-voltage protection with under voltage lockout, synchronization to circumvent beat frequency, short circuit and overload protection and magnetic coupled feedback for robust performance under extreme temperatures
