Texas Instruments Incorporated today introduced its first 4-A/8-A and 4-A/4-A single-channel, low-side gate drivers with industry-leading speed and drive current capability for minimizing switching loss of MOSFETs, IGBT power devices and wide band-gap power semiconductors, such as gallium nitride (GaN) devices.

The UCC27511 and UCC27517 drivers, part of TI’s new UCC2751x family, effectively replace discrete gate driver circuits that use bipolar junction transistors, significantly improving efficiency, reliability and power-density in applications, such as off-line isolated power supplies, telecom modules, air conditioner systems, UPS and portable power tools.

Key technical features of UCC27511 and UCC27517:
• High current drive capability increases reliability: UCC27511 supports drive current capability up to 4-A source/8-A sink, while the UCC27517 supports a 4-A source/sink peak-current pulses.
• Fastest switching speed: Both drivers have a fast typical propagation delay of 13 nanoseconds (ns) and a 9-ns/7-ns rise and fall time, providing an extremely low pulse distortion.
• Minimal switching loss: 0.375 ohm (0.5 ohm for UCC27517) pull-down resistance minimizes switching loss as the power switch transitions through the Miller Plateau and improves immunity to Miller turn-on events.
• Design flexibility: Supports 4.5-V to 18-V operating voltages and electrical parameters ensured across -40C to 140C. Maximum input voltage independent of VDD simplifies bias supply architecture.

Availability and pricing
The UCC27511 is available in a 6-pin SOT-23 package with a suggested resale price of $0.60 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The UCC27517 is available in a 5-pin SOT-23 package with a suggested resale price of $0.49 each in 1,000-unit quantities. TI plans to introduce additional single-channel gate drivers in the second quarter in 3-mm x 3-mm, 6-pin WSON packages and different CMOS input thresholds.
