To protect the USB 3.0 interface in computing and mobile devices from ESD events, Semtech has introduced a high-performance, ultra-low capacitance TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) device. In an easy-to-lay-out package, the RClamp3346P provides ultra-low clamping voltage performance and a low dynamic resistance of 0.15Ω typical.

Currently, USB 3.0 protection schemes require multiple TVS devices, which complicates design and final BOM. Measuring 2.7x0.8mm, the device replaces up to six discrete components and protects the SuperSpeed pairs and high-speed signal lines.

The RClamp3346P, which is based on the company’s SCR process technology, is claimed to offer the industry’s lowest overall clamping voltage without impacting the signal quality. Designed to meet the high operating data rate of the USB 3.0 interface, the device introduces less than 0.65pF capacitance into the signal path.

The RClamp3346P, which qualified to grade 1 of the AEC-Q100 automotive reliability standard, is available now, priced at $0.37 each and sold in 3,000-piece reels.

“A major trend with the newest generation of controllers is the increased ESD sensitivity due to shrinking process geometry,” commented Rick Hansen, Product Marketing Director, Protection Products, Semtech. “We believe the RClamp3346P is the perfect solution, giving designers peace of mind knowing the system is well protected from ESD transients.”
