Integrating a sense MOSFET along with a current mode PWM controller IC, the STR4A100 series has been introduced by Allegro MicroSystems. The off-line PWM controllers are suited for applications including audio visual, set top boxes, white goods and battery chargers within the appliance, office automation, consumer and industrial markets.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +125°C, the power ICs utilise a secondary side regulation topology which is suitable for low power SMPS regulators in applications such as white goods. Separated from the inverter or main power supply, an auxiliary power supply may require high-efficiency and low stand-by power.

The no load (stand-by) power consumption of less than 10mW is achieved by the automatic switching (in just 250ns) between the PWM operation in normal operation and the burst-oscillation under light load conditions. This results in a high cost-performance power supply system which requires few external components.

The STR4A100 series also features a random switching function, a slope compensation function, a leading edge blanking function, built-in startup circuitry, a bias assist function, and a soft start function. Additionally, the off-line PWM controller family features multiple protections, including overcurrent protection (pulse-by-pulse), overload protection (auto-restart), overvoltage protection (auto-restart), and thermal shutdown protection (auto-restart).

Available now, the RoHS compliant STR4A100 series off-line PWM controllers are supplied in 8-lead DIP and 8-lead SOIC packages.
