A 5A, 20VIN step-down µModule regulator in a 6.25x6.25x 5.01mm BGA package has been released by Linear Technology. With a few passive components, the LTM4625 fits into 0.5cm² on a double-sided PCB. The regulator incorporates the DC/DC controller, power switches, inductor and compensation components in a single package.

For operation, only two external ceramic capacitors (1206 case size) and a resistor (0603 case size) are required. Operating from a 4 to 20V input supply, the regulator delivers a regulated output adjustable between 0.6V to 5.5V with ±1.5% accuracy over line, load and temperature.

The LTM4625 operates at a user adjustable switching frequency from 800kHz to 4MHz or can be synchronised to an external clock from 700kHz to over 1.3MHz. For current sharing, the regulator also provides a clock out signal at the same frequency with selectable phase shift (90°, 120° or 180°). Alongside an external bias supply above 4V, the device can operate from an input voltage as low as 2.375V. The regulator is offered with output overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature fault protection.

Operating across a temperature range of -40 to 125°C, the LTM4625 is priced at $6.45 each for 1,000 piece quantities.
